Checklist for SG university

The Ultimate Checklist for University Applications (NUS, NTU, SMU)

Applying to top universities like NUS, NTU, and SMU can feel like a monumental task. With so many deadlines, documents, and details to track, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But with a solid plan, you can navigate the process smoothly and confidently.

This ultimate checklist breaks down the application journey into manageable phases. Follow these steps to ensure you put your best foot forward.

Phase 1: The Foundation (6-12 Months Before Applications Open)

This is the time for exploration and building a strong profile beyond your grades.

  • ☐ Research Courses & Universities: Go beyond the rankings. Dive deep into the course curriculums, teaching styles, and unique opportunities (like overseas exchanges or internship programs) at NUS, NTU, and SMU. Which environment best suits your learning style?
  • ☐ Check Specific Admission Requirements: This is crucial. Many courses have specific subject prerequisites (e.g., H2 Mathematics for Engineering, H2 Chemistry for Medicine). Make sure your subject combination aligns with your goals.
  • ☐ Build Your Portfolio: Your grades are just one part of the story. Start documenting your co-curricular activities (CCAs), leadership roles, volunteer work, passion projects, and any part-time jobs or internships. This will be invaluable for the Aptitude-Based Admissions (ABA) section.
  • ☐ Focus on Consistent Academic Performance: While your final A-Level or Poly GPA is key, universities often look at your overall academic journey. Consistent effort in school exams shows dedication and work ethic.

Phase 2: The Preparation (3-6 Months Before)

Now, it’s time to start crafting the core components of your application.

  • ☐ Brainstorm & Draft Your Personal Statement: Don’t leave this to the last minute. Start thinking about your story. What drives you to pursue your chosen course? What unique experiences have shaped you? Write a genuine and compelling narrative. Tip: Focus on showing, not just telling. Instead of saying you’re a “leader,” describe a specific situation where you led a team.
  • ☐ Identify & Approach Your Referees: Think carefully about which teachers or mentors know you well and can speak to your strengths. Approach them early, give them all the necessary information about the courses you’re applying to, and provide them with a copy of your resume or portfolio to help them write a strong testimonial.
  • ☐ Prepare for Aptitude Tests & Interviews: Check if your target courses (especially Law, Medicine, Architecture, and some design courses) require additional tests, interviews, or portfolio submissions. Start looking up practice materials and familiarise yourself with the format.

Phase 3: Go Time! (During the Application Window)

This is the execution phase. Attention to detail is everything. The main application window for A-Level holders is typically from mid-January to mid-March.

  • ☐ Create Your Application Portal Accounts: Head to the respective admissions websites for NUS, NTU, and SMU and create your user accounts.
  • ☐ Gather All Necessary Documents: Get digital copies of your essential documents ready. This usually includes your NRIC/Passport, A-Level/Polytechnic results, school testimonials, and CCA records.
  • ☐ Fill Out the Forms Meticulously: Go through each section of the online application form slowly. Pay special attention to the ABA/Discretionary Admissions section—this is where you showcase your portfolio. Tailor your write-ups to highlight skills relevant to the course you’re applying for.
  • ☐ Proofread Everything, Then Submit: Before you hit that final submit button, proofread your entire application for any typos or errors. It’s a great idea to have a trusted teacher, counsellor, or family member look it over. Do not wait until the last day to submit!

Phase 4: The Final Stretch (After Submission)

You’ve submitted your application—congratulations! The work isn’t quite over yet.

  • ☐ Check Your Email and Portals Regularly: Universities will use email as their primary mode of communication for interview invitations and offer letters. Check your inbox (including the spam folder) frequently.
  • ☐ Prepare for Interviews: If you’re shortlisted, congratulations! Re-read your personal statement, research the course and university again, and prepare answers to common questions about your motivations and goals.
  • ☐ Accept Your Offer: Once the offers start coming in (usually around April-May), take note of the acceptance deadline for each university. Make your final decision and accept your offer through the joint acceptance portal.

By breaking down the process, you can turn a stressful marathon into a series of manageable sprints. Good luck!
