Applying to universities accompanies writing, and if you are applying to multiple countries, the sheer volume of writing can overwhelm you. Different universities have distinct requirements. Some may need you to answer specific essay prompts while others want you to submit your statement of purpose (SOP). An SOP is a critical piece of your graduate school application. It’s your chance to convince the admissions committee that you are a perfect fit for their program. Here is a breakdown of how to craft a  strong SOP:

Three-Step Approach for Content:

Introduction: 

The introduction of your SOP is the most important part of your writing. It is your opportunity to grab and sustain the attention of the reader. You may want to give a creative and interesting hook. However, we suggest you keep it simple. Refrain from adding a quote or giving a cliched beginning. Also, do not not start by mentioning your name or grades. The admission officer gets all these details from your supporting documents.

Since there is a limit on words, make sure every sentence conveys something about you. In the first para, share your academic interests, and what sparked your desire for graduate study. Write about the journey that has led to your interest and the motivation to study the subject in your graduate studies. 

Academic Background and Preparation: 

You want to write an SOP that can differentiate you from other applicants and yet communicate your academic motivation, relevant coursework and future plans. You can give details of your learnings from your coursework, important papers/thesis projects, research experience (projects, mentors, role, and outcomes) and work experiences related to your field. It is also a good idea to use technical language related to your field in your SOP. It will demonstrate that you are already ahead on the learning curve and are a deserving candidate.

You can combine similar experiences into one paragraph or follow a chronological order of your experiences. While you are writing about these experiences, make it a point to share your learning from each of them. It is a way to demonstrate that you were actively engaged in each of your projects. 

Relevancy of Recent Experience (if applicable):

If you have worked after your graduation, explain your work experience (company, responsibilities, learnings) and connect it to your decision to pursue graduate studies. Also, in this case, your work experience should take precedence and should be mentioned in the second and third paragraphs of your SOP. There is no harm in stating that you felt a gap in your skills and are keen to pursue the graduate program to fast track your career. However, make sure that you are honest and do not exaggerate your work experience or skill set.

Here is a simple three-step guide for you to structure your writing:

1. Your academic motivation: Grad (master’s) studies is a specialised area of studies and it asks for a commitment to pursue the course at a much advanced level. Academic knowledge is a bit like pyramidal structure and see it is like climbing a mountain. It is not just another qualification. As a student, you need to talk about your abiding interest in the chosen area and what are the reasons for you to go to the next level. Are there unanswered questions in your field that evokes your curiosity and you have an academic commitment to understand?
2. Your suitability: What makes you suitable for the program?  Give details of your work but don’t repeat your resume here. You need to present your story, the narrative behind the resume that shows you will be a remarkable student for the grad program.
3. Future direction: Please show your journey planned with the master’s degree. You may want to talk about your short term and long term plans with the additional degree. It would be good if you can show that pursuing a master’s degree is a well considered decision and you have an idea which direction your ship will take. 

Don’t copy paste the same SOP to all programs. You have to customise your SOP for each university and add additional details about the faculty that inspires you, any specific lab or facility that makes the program interesting. A detailed homework on the particular master program will show you as a committed student who has invested time and energy in doing her homework.

Writing Style and Tone:

Craft a concise and focused statement of purpose (SOP) that targets 1-2 single-spaced pages (unless otherwise specified). Every sentence should contribute to your message. Maintain a positive and active voice throughout, using discipline-specific language to showcase your knowledge. Demonstrate your initiative, skills, and potential for success with specific examples. If you faced challenges that impacted your grades, address them positively, highlighting your perseverance. Finally, proofread meticulously to ensure your SOP is free of errors and shines brightly.

Follow Program Instructions: Every program is different and some have specific items/topics they want you to address. Check the website for specific details.

Seek Diverse Feedback: Have professors, mentors, or peers review your SOP for content, style, and clarity.
